ARTIST STATEMENT

After retiring from journalism and graphic design in 2007, my first works were paintings based on photographs that I had taken. My basketball paintings were inspired by photographs that featured players fully engaged on the court. I used large brushes as well as my fingers to apply paint. I established value first and then color. Layers were applied until I was satisfied with the result. Visual interest was important. Art should deal with truth, the things the artist knows about. Building up to the creating of these paintings were years spent in photojournalism, formal education in drawing and basic design, and the game itself – playing, coaching, and watching.
